ISR Instructor Training

The ISR Organization:

Over 200,000 infants and young children have participated in ISR lessons. Backed by over 45 years of research and development, ISR is dedicated to safety while providing infants and young children with the foundations for a life long love of the water.

Currently ISR has more than 450 certified instructors throughout the U.S. and 12 other countries.  But there are still areas that don’t have any ISR instructors.  To meet our goals, we have to be able to reach the children.  At the same time safety is our top priority that will never be compromised. ISR instruction goes beyond traditional swimming lessons as we are dedicated to teaching water safety and educating our communities as well.

Instructor Training Program:

Before being accepted into the ISR Training Program, each individual goes through a detailed interview process to help determine if ISR is the right fit for you and you for ISR.  The program for training to becoming an ISR instructor is a challenging 8 weeks.  The in-water component of ISR instructor training includes working side by side with a Master Instructor who will mentor each Student Instructor through the study program.  The  in-water portion of the training is 5 days per week for a minimum of 6 weeks.  The academic study portion encompasses aspects of the fields of behavioral sciences, sensorimotor learning, operant conditioning, anatomy and physiology as related to infants and young children in swim lessons.  There is also a video review component to examine details in the observation process.   Thorough understanding of these components allows instructors to tailor each lesson to the needs and abilities of the student.
